**IMPORTANT INFORMATION**
Passport Requirements & Criminal
Records
At this time, a passport is required
to re-enter the United States if traveling by air.
From January 31, 2008 to June 1, 2009,
U.S. citizens traveling to or from Canada via land or sea ports
must present a government-issued photo ID in addition to
proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate. A
voter’s registration card and social security card are not
considered to be proof of citizenship. Children under the age of 16
do not require a government-issued photo ID.
Presently, entry into Canada is prohibited if you have a criminal
record of any kind, even a conviction for DUI, regardless of how
aged the matter may be. In these situations it is possible to
obtain a "temporary resident permit" from the Canadian government.
This may take several weeks, so plan accordingly. If you have been
arrested (but not convicted) in the past, it is best to carry some
sort of documentation concerning the resolution of the particular
incident. In one situation, one of our guests was detained for
several hours over a 25 year old misdemeanor arrest in the United
States, which did not result in a conviction.
